Silver Lake Sand Dunes
We spent the day at Silver Lake Sand Dunes and the Polaris XP Pro performed great. The valving that GForce Racing did on the shocks was incredible and the tires from Planet SXS performed great. You can check out all the great stuff we did for the Pro HERE.
About Silver Lake Dunes
Silver Lake State Park is home to this 500-acre ORV (scramble) area – the only sand dune riding opportunity east of the Mississippi River. Technically speaking, the dunes are not considered a designated trail.
The Silver Lake Sand Dunes State Park ORV Area open season runs 7 days a week from April 1–October 31st, 2022. Season hours April-May 1 are 9:00am-8:00pm (May 1st–September 15th) are 9:ooam–10:00pm daily; and Late Season hours are (September 15th–Oct 31st ) 9:00am–8:00pm daily.
All you need are the ORV permits & passport in the photo to the right, all can be bought at the DNR ORV Welcome Center 8505 W Fox Rd. 49436. Also an 8ft dune safety flag, mounted to be 10 ft off the ground. These flags can be purchased at Duneland Off Road Center right out side the ORV entrance.
Safety is a significant issue at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. All vehicles entering the Dunes must have mounted to their front bumper a 10-foot mast holding an international orange flag. With the rolling terrain, spotting a flag coming over a hill can avert collisions. The flags and masts are sold at many area businesses. Vehicles must have seat belts, and passengers must be belted at all times. Drivers using their own vehicles should reduce the air pressure in their tires to 10 pounds per tire.
Park rangers constantly patrol the park, and tickets are issued for violation of park rules or unsafe driving practices. Be aware that the Dunes are constantly changing. A rolling hill that you drove over in the morning could be a steep cliff with a dramatic drop off by afternoon.
